There are massive differences in the lawn mowing requirements of the different lawn types, in field trials, Empire Zoysia won the race to be the lawn which requires the least amount of lawn mowing, while Kikuyu needed much more mowing than other grass types.
Lawn mowing is one of those yard jobs that most of us don't like, especially so in the heat of Summer when our healthy lawns require the most amount of lawn mowing. This leads many people who are choosing a new lawn to consider what the lawn mowing needs will be of each grass type before they decide on a particular lawn type. And this is an excellent consideration when choosing a new lawn.
Artificial grass, it's been around for a very long time in a few countries, but it is only now that it is being heavily marketed and sold in Australia. But is replacing our lawns with plastic grass really worth it? Despite the spin, these products really are not environmentally friendly at all. Still, these products may be suitable in limited areas.
Tall Fescue is a wonderful lawn, it is a cool season grass which produces a very thick, dark green and luscious soft carpet of green lawn. This grass can also often be grown in warmer climates when adequate water is applied to the lawn throughout the hotter months of Summer.
However, one of the drawbacks of Tall Fescue is that it is a classic bunch type grass, meaning one grass seed will produce one leaf blade, which will eventually produce more leaves in the same individual grass plant, but will never spread and grow new lawn. This means that once the lawn is damaged, it must be re-seeded or re-sodded for lawn repair to occur. This also leads Tall Fescue lawn to often become clumpy when they are not regularly re-seeded and repaired after damage.
Queensland Blue Couch remains one of the first choices for many homeowners around the country. In recent years, Queensland Blue has begun to be improved with several new variations of the grass, each giving new performance boosts, colour changes, and strengths where previous Queensland Blue grasses fell short.
Although a native to Europe and Asia where it is widely known as Meadow Grass, Kentucky Bluegrass is the most popular cool season grass in the United States today, a situation which hasn't changed for a very long time, and with very good reason. Although Kentucky Bluegrass will never reach the same popularity in Australia due to our warm climate conditions, it is still highly suited to and recommended for our own cooler regions.
Bentgrass is a Cool Season lawn type which is widely known as being one of the most beautiful lawns of all the lawn varieties. It has a lovely deep rich green colour, a fine leaf and forms a dense lush mat of carpet like sod. Developed in Europe, Bentgrass was one of the first grasses to be cultivated for use as a lawn, however it is NOT the most suitable grass for use as a home lawn - more about this later.
