How Often To Fertilise Lawns

Fertiliser Frequency

Lawn Fertilisers and Lawn Health

Lawn Fertilisers are simply packaged nutrients which are fed to lawns on a regular basis in order that lawns can gain and retain their greatest health. A good year round fertilising regime is important to all lawns to keep them in the best of health and to show off that lush carpet of green we all seek from our lawns. A healthy lawn is also more able to repair itself from damage, and to resist drought and disease.

Regular Application Of Fertilisers

Like all living things, lawns require a regular supply of nutrients in order to thrive and remain in their greatest health. We can do this with a good fertilising regime which supplies our lawns with nutrients on a regular basis.

Our aim is to maintain a constant supply of nutrients to our lawns throughout the year. So it is always better to apply fertiliser in small amounts on a regular basis as this will maintain consistent nutrients in very safe levels that the lawn can use. The application in small levels guarantees the lawn will absorb all the nutrients that are applied, and that none are wasted.

Fertilising Regime For Lawns

A regular application of most brands of lawn fertilisers is recommended every 6 - 8 weeks apart. Most fertilisers will have a recommended application rate of about 50 grams per m2 - it's important not to exceed these amounts.

To make things even simpler, fertilising every 2 months is a good frequency.

But which months are the best to fertilise in and which aren't, or does it even matter? Overall it probably doesn't matter a great deal, but it is just as easy to implement a better fertilising regime than it is to implement an ordinary one.

Timing fertilising to coincide with Winter is always a preferred option, having a dose of Winter fertiliser just before Winter, and another during Winter, so this is what our following regime is based on. This regime also has the added benefit of some lawns being able to skip fertilising in the middle of Summer if the lawn is in peak health.
