Fertilising Lawns In Winter

Winter Fertiliser

Lawns Can and Should Be Fertilised In Winter

Lawns can be fertilised in Winter, and part of every good lawn fertilising regimen should include the preparation for Winter fertilising which begins before Winter and continues into the middle of Winter.

Despite many concerns about fertilising lawns in Winter from earlier times, these beliefs simply aren't true for the majority of lawns in the country, and the majority of lawns being grown in Australia are Warm Season Grasses being grown in warm environments.

Winter Fertilising Keeps Lawns Green Over Winter

Warm Season lawns in Australia never really go into a state of full hibernation over Winter, most will semi-hibernate and continue growing at a reduced rate. Because of this, lawns can make good use of the correct fertiliser applied at the right times. Lawns can take up these nutrients and benefit from them by greening the leaf and continuing to keep the lawn strong over Winter, being more resistant to the poor effects of the cold weather.

Fertilising for Winter will involve the use of a special Winter Fertiliser, which will be lower in the nutrients which promote lawn growth and higher in the nutrients which strengthen lawns. A Winter Fertiliser will also include increased Iron which is important to lawns over Winter.

Winter Lawn Fertilising Regimen

The Winter lawn fertilising regimen should begin one month before Winter begins. May is the month to put down the first application of Winter fertiliser, this allows the lawn to take in all the nutrients it needs to strengthen itself before Winter arrives.

The second and last application of Winter Fertiliser will be two months later in July.

Winter Lawn Repair

We can never expect any growth spurts from using fertilisers over Winter, nor any type of lawn repair. By applying fertiliser for Winter, we're keeping the lawn strong and as green as it can be throughout the colder months. Which in turn leaves the lawn strong and healthy to come back to life when Spring arrives.

Winter Fertilising Cool Season Lawns

Cool Season grasses which are being grown in areas that are subject to heavy frost or snow over the Winter will not necessarily be a good candidate for Winter fertilising. However, an application of Winter Fertiliser in mid to late Autumn will strengthen the lawn for Winter and prepare it to re-emerge the next Spring.
