Lawn Care For Cool Season Lawns

Lawn care for Cool Season Grasses is often different to caring for the Warm Season grass types which are most common in Australia, and this lawn care extends to the methods used to de-thatch these lawns periodically. De-thatching and keeping Cool Season lawns healthy often involves the regular use of a lawn coring machine which benefits the lawn in many more ways than it otherwise would for other grass types. In fact, lawn coring should be considered as part of the normal lawn care routines for all Cool Season Grass types.

De-Thatching Lawns

The process of de-thacthing usually involves the use of a Vertimower to scarify the lawn or the use of a rotary mower to gradually mow lower and lower to gain the desired lawn height and thatch removal.

Both of these methods of de-thatching are completely unsuitable for Cool Season grasses because the processes requires the lawn to regenerate from it's runners, and runners are something which Cool Season Lawns don't have.

The nature of the thatch is also different, whereas the Warm Season Grasses will have thatch made up primarily of old lawn runners, the thatch of Cool Season Grasses is made up of old leaf matter, old roots and other organic debris.

Lawn Coring To De-Thatch Cool Season Grasses

Lawn coring is a great method to regularly use for the care of Cool Season Grasses. If done once a year, coring will regularly remove small amounts of the thatch build-up, as well as aerating the soil to allow more oxygen, fertilisers and water to flow more freely through the soil.

By coring Cool Season lawns regularly - we then always stay on top of the thatch ever getting out of control and getting too thick, or to a stage where it can no longer be effectively removed.

Next to proper mowing, watering and fertilising, yearly lawn coring will be of enormous benefit to the ongoing health and vitality of all Cool Season Lawns. The best time to core these lawn types is in the Autumn, which will allow the soil and lawn to best survive and thrive in the cooler months of Winter.
